The report “Louder than words: An agenda for action to end state use of child soldiers” is published to mark the tenth anniversary year of the entry into force of the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflict. It examines the record of states in protecting children from use in hostilities by their own forces and by state-allied armed groups. It finds that, while governments’ commitment to ending child soldier use is high, the gap between commitment and practice remains wide.

The major annual harvests are now nearing completion across the Greater Horn of Africa. The crop has already been harvested in the south of the region, harvesting is ongoing in the equatorial regions and is approaching maturity in the northern areas. Immediate humanitarian efforts now concentrate on meeting the peak relief needs in the preharvest period in the northern areas. Simultaneously attention is turning to assessing emergency needs in the coming year. Areas of current priority concern are shown in Figure 1 below.

Rome, 21 December 2000 - Some 28 million people in sub-Saharan Africa are facing severe food shortages as serious food supply problems persist in a number of countries, mainly because of prolonged drought and civil strife, according to a report released today by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The situation is most critical in eastern Africa, where 20 million people face serious food shortages that will require continued food aid well into 2001.
