MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

As wars dragged on in many parts of the world, huge numbers of people struggled to meet even their most basic needs in 2017. In the absence of political solutions, these people seem destined to endure even more violence in the coming year. If humanitarian organizations cannot rise to the challenge and provide greater relief and protection, even more people could suffer.

report WaterAid

2018 may well be remembered as the year one of the world’s great tourist destinations ran out of water.

In a startling reminder that our world’s most precious resource is becoming increasingly scarce for too much of the population, Cape Town hit the headlines for declaring a date for Day Zero: the day on which city taps run dry.

But long queues and limited water supplies are already happening in many other less headline-worthy locales, reminding us of the need for better and fairer management of Earth’s water supply.

Distinguished President,
Excellencies,
Colleagues, Friends,

A few days ago, we celebrated the centenary year of Nelson Mandela’s birth. We spoke of his example; his fortitude, his suffering and compassion, while recalling also the declaration that he and my predecessor Mary Robinson signed in 2000 on diversity and tolerance.
