  • New on polioeradication.org: Technical advisory groups met last week to review progress made to eradicate polio in Pakistan and Afghanistan, and advise on the way forward to further improve the quality of programme implementation during the low transmission season.

  • In Pakistan, the polio eradication programme and the routine immunization programme are working hand in hand to increase vaccination coverage in urban areas.

Its purpose is to consolidate this information and present it in an accessible way, providing policymakers, researchers and humanitarian practitioners with an evidence base to support humanitarian policy decisions and provide context for operational decisions.
The information presented covers two main areas: humanitarian needs and assistance in 2016, and humanitarian trends, challenges and opportunities.

At least 10 people were killed on 7 and 10 December in the South-West region, which along with the North-West, have been gripped by protests and violence against alleged Government marginalisation. More than 5,000 people have already fled to neighbouring Nigeria. There are fears that the figure could rise with the escalating tensions.

Countries where external emergency food assistance needs are anticipated are identified. Projected lean season months highlighted in red indicate either an early start or an extension to the typical lean season.

Some 37 countries, 29 of which are in Africa, require external assistance for food, according to the report.

DROUGHT LEAVES 28,000 FOOD INSECURE

Around 28,000 people are in “crisis” and “emergency” phases of food insecurity following poor harvest in this year due to irregular and low rainfall. The number is projected to reach 36,000 in 2018 if no adequate measures are taken. Overall food security is currently stable, with cereals available in markets. However, prices have increased. The authorities have developed a 7.7 million-euro programme to save livestock and provide employment to the affected population.
