Highlights

• The Uganda Ministry of Health and partners have intensified preparedness and response interventions following a confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease in Tchomia health zone, near Lake Albert where the Democratic Republic of the Congo borders with Uganda.

• Over 2,200 reports and questions on Ebola were received via SMS from U-Reporters. Most U-Reporters confirmed that they had heard about Ebola through radio, television, community awareness campaigns and posters.

• A total of 12,979 children (6,779 boys; 6,200 girls) accessed critical protection services, including temporary emergency shelter, psychosocial support, release from detention, family tracing and reunification, medical support, as well as access to education and reintegration opportunities.

• Since the beginning of the year, 37,786 children with severe acute malnutrition have been admitted and treated in 418 health facilities supported by UNICEF.

• 39,352 children under the age of 5 have been screened for malnutrition and 3,450 were admitted for severe acute malnutrition (SAM) treatment in July in UNICEF-supported outpatient and inpatient treatment centers in drought affected areas and Lunda Norte.

• 1,000 mobilizers were trained on cholera prevention in Luanda’s cholera affected communities, reaching over 23,000 people per day through door-to-door visits.

UNHCR and its partner, the Commission Nationale pour les Réfugiés (CNR), distributed 12,909 identity cards to Central African Republic refugees over 12 year of age in Nord and Sud-Ubangi Provinces.

A major funding gap is affecting UNHCR’s programme for Burundian refugees in DRC, with education, health and shelter being among the hardest-hit sectors.

On 14 August, UNHCR declared an internal L2 emergency in NordKivu and Ituri Provinces, in view of the return situation in Ituri Province and ongoing displacement in NordKivu Province.

HIGHLIGHTS

• With support from the Government of Japan two additional rooms and a play park for young children were completed; these facilities will be handed over to the Government of Rwanda and UNHCR on 5 September.

• Anaemia among children under-5 remains high at 44.6 per cent in Mahama Camp (Burundian refugees) and Nyabiheke Camp (Congolese refugees). Advocacy with the Government has resulted in home fortification using micro nutrient powders, which was introduced in the refugee camps in January 2018.

  • 21 September, a confirmed case has been identified in Tchomia Health Zone, Ituri province. UNICEF has deployed a mixed team composed of WASH, C4D, and psychosocial to Tchomia to implement the response.

  • 21 September, a meeting was held with the Secretary General of Ministry of health, UNICEF, WHO, and other partners to discuss capacity building in fifteen priority provinces as part of the Ebola emergency preparedness plan, which aims to control Ebola outbreaks within the country.
