In the eastern DRC, the humanitarian situation remains dire, as thousands of civilians continue to suffer the effects of fighting and atrocities, such as rape.

One of the aid groups working in the region is the International Rescue Committee. Bob Kitchen is head of emergency operations for the group. From Goma, he told VOA English to Africa Service reporter Joe De Capua insecurity has been on the rise, although Christmas has brought a lull in the fighting.

KINSHASA, Dec 24 (Reuters) - Fighting in eastern Congo this month has led to a surge in child abductions by armed groups who force minors to fight, carry ammunition or become their sex slaves, Save the Children said on Monday.

Children's rights campaigners, including the British-based charity, say most of the factions fighting in eastern Congo's complex web of conflict left behind after the vast country's 1998-2003 war have used child soldiers.

Nairobi/Goma_(dpa) _ Civilians fleeing violence in east Congo are facing a shortage of medical care as disease outbreaks begin to plague the troubled region, the charity Doctors Without Borders said Wednesday.

Fighting between government troops and forces loyal to renegade general Laurent Nkunda have pushed civilians from their homes several times in ongoing flare-ups which have intensified since August.

"We are witnessing an alarming situation in our medical programme in Masisi and Rutshuru districts," said Colette Gadenne, head of mission for the group, known by its …

Kinshasa/Nairobi_(dpa) _ Children are being recruited into armed conflict in eastern Congo, the United Nations said Friday, echoing warnings by human rights groups that all parties to the fighting were enlisting youth under 18.

"A significant number of child recruitments has taken place in the schools in the territories of Masisi and Rutshuru in North Kivu," since June, the UN's mission in the Congo (MONUC) said in a statement.

MONUC added that many of the children had already been demobilized from the myriad armies in Congo's east, many of whom had fought in the …

GOMA, Congo, Dec 10 (Reuters) - Thousands of Congolese civilians are caught in the crosshairs of an army offensive against a rebel stronghold in North Kivu province because they refuse to abandon their livestock, UN officials said on Monday.

The civilians, mostly pastoralists from the Tutsi tribe who cherish their cattle, were warned last week by UN peacekeepers to flee the town of Kirolirwe, which serves as a military base for renegade Tutsi General Laurent Nkunda.

The army threw more than 20,000 soldiers into a major offensive a week ago to forcibly disarm …
