If the youngest among Lulu Mitshabu’s six girls complain about doing it tough, she barely needs to open her mouth, since her oldest daughter usually gets in before her.

“She says to them, ‘You have no idea’ because she is the most affected of all of them. She remembers us running,” she said.

Ms Mitshabu had two young children when she fled the Democratic Republic of Congo nearly 25 years ago. Her husband, Jeff, had been arrested because of his association with the human rights organisation they both worked for.

Fear and insecurity has sent tens of thousands of innocent civilians into hiding and flight as the M23 Rebels now occupy Goma, the main city in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The military spokesperson of the M23 has now publically declared that the rebels are prepared to march onwards to take over the country’s capital, Kinshasa should the people “invite” them.

Caritas is extremely concerned that water and electricity supplies have been cut off; accentuating the panic and uncertainty amongst the city of one million people.

The recent displacement of more than 200,000 people as fighting spreads across the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, has caused a humanitarian crisis that threatens critical development programs in the region.

People fleeing ongoing violence between M23 rebels and the DRC’s army, the FARDC, have been forced to take refuge in public places including schools, churches and with host families.

“They come haggard, exhausted and desperate,” said Taylor Kakala, communications officer for Caritas Goma. “These men, women and children fled in panic, leaving with nothing.”

They’re coming from the Masisi region in North Kivu, a troubled part of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo to the safer towns of Sake and Goma. They’ve fled under machine gun fire, forced to run as rockets and mortars fell on their homes.
