Ottawa - The Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, today announced a historic investment to the United Nations' Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to help ensure there are funds available to quickly respond to humanitarian emergencies around the world.

The investment is $192 million over five years, which is Canada's largest investment to date.

"I am pleased that Canada is always there when it's time to respond to humanitarian emergencies abroad such as floods, hurricanes, and earthquakes," said Minister Oda.

Tens of thousands of civilians, mostly women and girls, have been sexually assaulted or tortured over the course of more than ten years of conflict in the country.

The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) will contribute $15M over four years to the United Nations Population Fund's (UNFPA) project against sexual violence.
