Mauritania hosts over 2,000 urban refugees and asylumseekers and more than 53,000 Malian refugees in Mbera, a camp established in 2012 in the arid south-eastern region close to the Malian border.
Despite the conclusion of a peace agreement in 2015, large-scale returns of Malian refugees are not expected due to persistent violence in northern Mali. In February alone, 1,898 new arrivals were registered in Mbera.
As the situation in northern Mali continues to be unstable, Mauritania struggles to cope with the growing needs of new refugees and the vulnerable host communities.

The refugees are currently hosted at newly opened Kenani transit centre and Mantapala refugee settlement in Nchelenge district, North of Zambia. The refugees are facing unique protection risks as a result of insecure shelter provisions, broken community structures, insufficient food, water and sanitation. Children and women are most vulnerable, with an increased risk of suffering from malnutrition and water-borne diseases.

Between 2007 and 2016, Europe’s proportion of resettlement sub-missions globally has increased from approximately 9% to more than 18%, and in 2017 reached 52%.
