GENEVA (20 June 2017) - The Human Rights Council in its midday meeting held an interactive dialogue with the Independent Expert on enhancing capacity building and technical cooperation with Côte d’Ivoire in the field of human rights. It then heard an oral update by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, on the situation of human rights in the Democratic Republic of the Congo followed by an interactive dialogue.

I. Introduction

  1. In its resolution 32/12, the Human Rights Council requested the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to prepare a report on the impact of arms transfers on the enjoyment of human rights in order to provide States and other relevant stakeholders with elements to assess the relationship between arms transfers and human rights law that may guide them to strengthen efforts to effectively protect human rights.

GENEVA (20 décembre 2016) – Des experts des Nations Unies* demandent aux autorités de la République démocratique du Congo (RDC) de lever les restrictions politiques qui, selon eux, portent atteinte aux droits des peuples à la liberté d’expression, de réunion pacifique et d’association.

Ces restrictions incluent une interdiction de facto de tous les rassemblements et réunions publics dans les principales villes du pays. Elles ont été introduites au cours de la dernière année et réitérées avec une annonce faite le 1er décembre interdisant les organisations non enregistrées.

GENEVA (19 December 2016) – United Nations experts* are calling on the authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to lift political restrictions which they say are curbing people’s rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association.

These restrictions, which include a de facto ban on all public political rallies and meetings in the country’s main cities, were introduced over the past year and were reiterated with an announcement issued on 1 December banning organizations not registered.

The action, which includes jamming radio broadcasts and arresting journalists, is targeting the independent media at a time of high political tension, says the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of expression, David Kaye.
