Health:

The outbreak of acute watery diarrhoea in Yei town was declared over on 19 March, six weeks after it started on 28 January. The outbreak peaked sometime during the first week of February. The spread of the disease amongst the vulnerable population has been contained in Juba and Yei although occasional new cases and deaths are reported, especially from remote villages and health facilities.

The Federal Ministry of Health together with WHO, UNICEF and NGOs established after reports of outbreaks of meningococcal meningitis in the country.

Health:

As of 27 February the Acute Watery Diarrhoea (AWD) Task Force in Juba led by the Federal Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Health of the Government of Southern Sudan, in collaboration with other partners, reported a total number of 5,178 cases and 97 deaths (case fatality rate 1.87%) from acute watery diarrhoea in Southern Sudan. These cases were reported between 28 January and 27 February 2006.

A Federal Ministry of Education decree on 'depriving children from education' has been sent to all State Ministries of Education for dissemination and follow-up. This decree is considered as a very important step to stop/decrease dismissal of children due to failure of paying school-fees.

Assistance and Protection in Locations of Displacement:

Khartoum:

Oxfam completed the rehabilitation of six schools in El Nasir locality, as well as the provision of furniture to schools in Abu Sayed and Jebel Aulia. The agency also constructed four classrooms in Jebel Aulia mainly to replace those collapsed during recent heavy rainfall in Khartoum.

SENAD is supporting 15 schools in IDP camps (Hajwasit, Sobat, Mayo) and the number of pupils has increased to 9,020 (4,251 are girls).
