Pilot project shows how drinking water supply and ecosystems can be protected by catchment-based Integrated Water Resources Management.

Nairobi – River catchment management is improving drinking water supplies in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) thanks to projects implemented by UN Environment.

A catchment management demonstration project from 2013 to June 2016 protected and rehabilitated Lukaya River, one of the main watersheds supplying drinking water to DRC capital, Kinshasa.

2012 – A Resounding Endorsement of Environmental Governance

History was made in 2012 with the first institutional reform of the environment programme of the UN since the Stockholm UN Conference on the Human Environment established UNEP in 1972.
At Rio+20, Heads of State and governments decided to strengthen and upgrade UNEP. This was followed by the adoption of a resolution at the 67th session of the UN General Assembly later in the year.

The sub-programme

From the Balkans to Afghanistan, Lebanon, Sudan and Haiti, UNEP has responded to crisis situations in more than 40 countries since 1999, delivering world-class environmental expertise to national governments and partners in the UN family.

In response to increased global awareness of the environmental dimensions of crises, and to growing demand for the services that address them, UNEP has identified “disasters and conflicts” as one of its six priority areas.

UNEP’s Post-Conflict and Disaster Management Branch coordinates the theme.
