AGADEZ, Niger – Leur existence se limite à attendre dans la chaleur. Nombre d’entre eux doivent dormir directement sur le sol. Mais au moins, ils sont maintenant en sécurité.
Marie-Roseline Darnycka Bélizaire is on the front-lines of the battle against Ebola.
She’s leading the hunt for the virus in the Itipo area in the northwest of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The communities at risk are spread out over a wide area and the roads are bad. Her team of more than 20 field epidemiologists is using mostly motorcycles to get around.
Marie-Roseline Belizaire said “We have to go sometimes as far as 80 km from the coordination base, so in a day we can do 160 km.”

AGADEZ, Niger - Their lives have been reduced to waiting in the heat. Many must sleep on the ground. But at least now they are safe.
They are refugees, asylum seekers and persons of concern for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. They wait now here, in Agadez, Niger. Most are Sudanese, and many have appalling stories to tell.
WASHINGTON, JUNE 21, 2018 --- The World Bank Group’s Pandemic Emergency Financing Facility (PEF) welcomes Australia as a donor to the PEF, joining Japan and Germany. Australia is contributing US$7.2 million to the PEF’s Cash Window, which was set up through an initial contribution from Germany. Australia will also now be a voting member of the PEF Steering Body.

The Action for Peacekeeping (A4P) initiative, launched by Secretary-General António Guterres at the end of March, champions a people-centric approach to peacekeeping. It suggests that all peacekeeping stakeholders—the Security Council, the Secretariat, the troop-, police-, and finance-contributing countries, and the parties to a peace process—are ultimately responsible to ordinary people living in communities torn apart by violence.

The Commission has released today €34 million in humanitarian assistance for the most vulnerable populations in Uganda and Kenya, with a special focus on displaced populations in both countries.
The situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is one of the world’s most complex and challenging yet forgotten crises. As of 31 May, over 772,000 Congolese refugees are being hosted in countries in Africa.
From 1 January to 31 May alone, some 104,351 Congolese fled to neighboring countries, with a particularly significant increase in refugee flows to Uganda, Burundi and Zambia.
In response to the Ebola crisis that has impacted the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Government of Japan is allocating 700,000 USD to UNICEF. The funds will be used to support activities in the area of community communication and psycho-social assistance to affected families.
Luanda - The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has acknowledged Angola’s role in protecting the refugees from Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), based in the eastern Lunda Norte province.
The recognition came from the UNHCR representative in Angola, Philippa Candler, during a meeting with the president of the 10th Commission on Human Rights, Petitions, Complaints and Suggestions of the Citizens of the National Assembly, Raúl Danda held on Wednesday in Luanda.
The Ministry of Health and WHO continue to closely monitor the outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. There is cautious optimism. Slightly over a month into the response, further spread of EVD has largely been contained. However, in spite of progress, there should be no room for laxity and complacency until the outbreak is controlled. The focus of operations remains on intensive surveillance and active case finding.
Refugee resettlement to the U.S. has been ground to a halt. Under the Administration, a series of policy changes will result in no more than 21,000 refugees being welcomed to the U.S. in Fiscal Year 2018. This will mark the lowest arrivals ever in the program’s history at a time when global needs have never been greater.

Members of the media,
Ladies and Gentlemen.
All over the world, children are living lives with no clear future after being forced to flee their homes. Driven out by conflict, extreme poverty, droughts, food shortages, or political turmoil, they and their families live in refugee settlements, with host communities who themselves struggle to cope, in the shadows, in between laws and in the middle of chaos.
