  • UNHCR in Rwanda honored International Women’s Day (IWD) with two events in March: the first event was held 7 March in Kigali to launch the report of the comprehensive interagency gender assessment conducted in all refugee camps in Rwanda in 2016 by MIDIMAR, UNHCR, UN Women and other partners.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • UNHCR and the Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs (MIDIMAR) held a conference on refugee solutions and socio-economic inclusion in Rwanda’s development planning. Among the outcomes of the stakeholder consultations included an affirmation that refugees can contribute positively to Rwanda’s economy and plans for next steps to boost their self-reliance through the launching of the MIDIMAR-UNHCR Joint Strategy for Economic Inclusion of refugees.

HIGHLIGHTS:

As of 18 August, Mahama refugee camp has officially surpassed 50,000 refugees. It currently hosts 50,013 Burundian refugees, making it the largest refugee camp in Rwanda, more than twice the size of the country’s largest Congolese camp (Kiziba Camp, at 19,000 refugees).
