Liberia - Nimba County (extract from the weekly epi bulletin of W13): on 25/03, a suspected case of cholera was reported from Tapitta district. The patient was a 16 years-old female who died en-route to the health facility. No sample was collected from the case at the time. As of 06/04, a total of 6 suspected cases, including 2 deaths were reported from 3 communities: Dialla (1), Nahlah 1 (4), Nahlah 2 (1). Specimens were collected from 2 cases, of which one tested positive for vibrio cholera at the Jackson F. Doe referral hospital in Tappita District.

Lagos, Nigeria 1st December, 2014 – About two hundred and fifty health volunteers from Nigeria to be deployed to Ebola affected countries under the framework of the African Union Support to Ebola Outbreak in West Africa (ASEOWA), have commenced pre deployment training as part of the protocol before deployment. The contingent was assembled by the Federal Government of Nigeria in response to the appeal made by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma in October for Member States to contribute health personnel to join the fight against Ebola.

Since the Ebola outbreak in West Africa was officially declared on 22 March in Guinea, it has claimed 5,420 lives in the region. The outbreak is the largest ever, and is currently affecting four countries in West Africa: Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Mali. One person in Spain and three people in the USA have recovered; one person in the USA has died. Outbreaks in Nigeria and Senegal have been declared over. A separate outbreak in DRC has also ended.
