• 1 September, 2017: The Back to School Campaign was launched throughout the country, and 55,951 school-aged children targeted by the campaign will receive school materials in the Greater Kasai region.

Masisi, 13 October 2017 – In the eastern province of North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the territory of Masisi remains entrenched in armed conflict, ethnic violence, and instability. Within this insecure situation, thousands of families flee their homes each year.

Kinshasa, 13 October 2017 – UN-Habitat in close collaboration the Ministry of Land Affairs through the National Commission on land reform (CONAREF) recently organised a national workshop in Kinshasa on the “elaboration of provincial strategies for improving land governance in the Democratic Republic of Congo”.
The two-day national consultative workshop is one out the outputs of the Community Participatory Land Use Planning project implemented by UN-Habitat in three provinces of the Republic of Congo, namely North Kivu, South Kivu and Ituri.

Aperçu de la situation
Over 3,360 refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) fled into Zambia between 30 August and 3 October 2017. The refugees have been fleeing inter-ethnic conflicts as well as clashes between government forces and armed militias in HautKatanga province. Several of them have reported extreme brutality committed by all parties against civilians.

As smoke rises over the lush green landscape from fires across the river, inhabitants of Mobayi-Mbongo in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) stop on their way to market and gather on the bank to watch.
In September, fighting and insecurity continued to force civilians out of their homes, particularly in Unity and Upper Nile. Many of those had been displaced several times in recent months. In Unity, fighting and insecurity in Koch, Mayendit, and Rubkona counties forced the relocation of aid workers, suspension of food distribution and medical evacuation of civilians. In Upper Nile, fighting in and around Aburoc, on the western bank of the River Nile, on 11 September, reportedly led to civilian deaths, displacement and forced the temporary relocation of aid workers.
This brief summarizes FEWS NET’s most forward-looking analysis of projected emergency food assistance needs in FEWS NET coverage countries. The projected size of each country’s acutely food insecure population (IPC Phase 3 and higher) is compared to last year and the recent five-year average and categorized as Higher (p), Similar (u), or Lower (q). Countries where external emergency food assistance needs are anticipated are identified. Projected lean season months highlighted in red indicate either an early start or an extension to the typical lean season.
