The WHO Health Emergencies Programme is currently monitoring 57 events in the region. This week’s edition covers key ongoing events, including:

Rift Valley fever in Uganda
Ebola virus disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Lassa fever in Liberia
Humanitarian crisis in South Sudan
Humanitarian crisis in north-east Nigeria.

  • For each of these events, a brief description, followed by public health measures implemented and an interpretation of the situation is provided.

Overview

The Early Warning Early Action initiative has been developed with the understanding that disaster losses and emergency response costs can be drastically reduced by using early warning analysis to act before a crisis escalates into an emergency.
Early actions strengthen the resilience of at-risk populations, mitigate the impact of disasters and help communities, governments and national and international humanitarian agencies to respond more effectively and efficiently.

During the month of June 2018, 8,729 persons from South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Burundi and other countries, arrived in Uganda—the majority from DRC. The humanitarian situation remains unpredictable in South Sudan, DRC and Burundi.

Refugees from South Sudan report fleeing primarily out of fear of being killed by fighters from either side of the conflict inside the country, while those from DRC report inter-ethnic clashes and fears related to the upcoming elections.

The South Sudan Regional Refugee Response Plan (RRRP) 2017 articulates the regional protection and humanitarian needs of an anticipated 2.13 million South Sudanese refugees by 31 December 2017. The RRRP outlines the inter-agency response strategy and financial requirements of 58 agencies responding across six countries of asylum: Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo,

In May 2018, tens of thousands of people were displaced as a result of continued clashes in several parts of Unity, including Mayom, Rubkona, Guit, Koch, Leer and Mayendit. The people of Leer County suffered the worst of the fighting, with over 40,000 people reported to be displaced to the swampy areas of Meer, Pap, Kok, Dir and Toch-Riak. Partners continued to report the burning down of villages, looting, indiscriminate killings and sexual violence. In Central Equatoria, sporadic fighting was reported outside Yei town.
