2016 was a challenging year for human rights and democracy, with a shrinking space for civil society and complex humanitarian and political crises emerging. In this context, the European Union showed leadership and remained strongly committed to promote and protect human rights and democracy across the world.

ROME, ITALY – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) welcomed a donation of US$6 million from the Republic of Korea that will allow WFP to enhance innovative food security monitoring systems in ten countries in Africa, enabling the organization to hear directly from people in need. The funding was raised through Korea’s air-ticket solidarity levy, which is collected from each international flight passenger departing Korea. Known as the “Global Disease Eradication Fund,” it is part of Seoul’s commitment to ending global disease, poverty and hunger.

Physical injuries are some of the more visible, and at times most deadly, consequences of gender-based violence (GBV). But the long-term mental health consequences are often invisible and left untreated. Similarly, the reproductive and sexual health needs of survivors from rape and sexual violence – to reduce the risk of HIV and sexually transmitted infections, unwanted pregnancies and unsafe terminations, and long-term reproductive complications – are often unmet, stigmatized and under-reported.

1 . The government of the Republic of Korea will provide a combined 1.5 million US dollars -- or 500,000 US dollars each -- in humanitarian assistance for the Central African Republic, Somalia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which are facing chronic humanitarian crises but not receiving sufficient assistance from the international community.

2 . The three aforementioned countries have been undergoing severe humanitarian crises triggered by civil wars; public insecurity and political instability; vulnerable governance; and climate change over the past few decades.

Next week, Mozambique, formerly one of the world’s most heavily mined countries, will formally declare it has completed mine clearance on its territory, the 29th country to do so since the 1990s. This leaves 60 countries and territories still contaminated according to Clearing the Mines, a review of mine action programmes around the world published today by Norwegian People’s Aid. The report’s authors have calculated that by 2020 another 20 countries should have completed mine clearance and the urgent humanitarian threat removed from the other 40.

Walikalé (Nord-Kivu), le 09 juillet 2015 : Au cours d’une mission conjointe, le PNUD-RDC et KOICA (Agence coréenne de Coopération internationale) ont visité les réalisations et infrastructures construites par le PNUD-RDC dans le cadre du projet Relèvement communautaire et Consolidation de la paix dans le Nord-Kivu, financé par KOICA, dans les territoires de Walikalé et du Masisi. Le projet s’est terminé le 30 juin 2015. Les populations bénéficient donc à présent, d’un centre de formation professionnelle et d’un marché rural, entièrement fonctionnels.
