Introduction

World Humanitarian Data and Trends presents global and country-level data-and-trend analysis about humanitarian crises and assistance. Its purpose is to consolidate this information and present it in an accessible way, providing policymakers, researchers and humanitarian practitioners with an evidence base to support humanitarian policy decisions and provide context for operational decisions.
The information presented covers two main areas: humanitarian needs and assistance in 2016, and humanitarian trends, challenges and opportunities.

Between January 2015 and June 2016, open sources reported 356 severe events in which 816 aid workers were reported killed (308), kidnapped (204) or assaulted or injured (304) in 35 countries. The highest number of severe events was reported from South Sudan (55), whilst the highest number of affected staff was reported from Afghanistan (196 individuals), followed by Syria (122 individuals). In 2015, open sources reported 515 aid workers killed (179), kidnapped (129) and assaulted or injured (207) in 234 severe incidents. During the first six months of 2016, open sources reported 301 aid workers killed (129), kidnapped (75) and assaulted or injured (97) in 122 severe incidents.
