Doctors Worldwide (DWW) this year again has taken the opportunity to use Muslim religious festival Eid-ul Adha (sacrificing animals and distribute to poor as prophet Abraham's ritual) for food distribution in Congo (DRC), Ghana and Kenya. Most of the donations were collected in Turkey by DWW-Turkey.

GOMA- Doctors Worldwide (DWW) - UK based international medical relief organisation- is setting up mobile clinics for displaced people in Goma/eastern Congo(DRC).

More than 250,000 people have become displaced and are living in temporary shelters or even in the open air in and around Goma as a result of recent rebellion in North Kivu province. There are no adequate food, water and hygiene facilities for them.

Doctors Worldwide (DWW) has sent a team to Goma led by DWW country director Mr Jibrill Kasongo.

There have been cholera outbreaks in some parts of Katanga province since September. Local medical authorities and humanitarian organizations started to send medical teams in order to control the outbreak. DWW with its partner RADEM is working with the local authorities. DWW donated 5000 litres of saline to help them. DWW team have arrived to Malemba Nkulu region with salines. They are treating patients at tent hospitals. DWW also building two maternities in this region to improve the healthcare infrastructure.

Doctors Worldwide (DWW) has set up 4 emergency medical teams to send the area. . Transport is very difficult particularly after heavy rains in recent weeks. We are co-coordinating help with WHO, OCHA and local government.

2007 has seen continued expansion of DWWs operations and work in DR Congo. Two further rural Maternity and baby clinics are currently under construction. Around 100 babies per month are currently being delivered in our various clinics often in the only clean, quiet and medically supported facilites women will have access too.

In total 5534 animals sacrificed in Congo(DRC) and 350 in Sierra Leone. Meat distributed first week of January over 35,000 families in Katanga, Kinshasa,Kasai Oriental, Kasai occidental, North Kivu, South Kivu, Kisangani, Matadi, Equateur, Bandundu, Maniema provinces in Congo (DRC) and Sierra Leone.

Hewa Bora hospital is opened in an underserved area of Lubumbashi-Congo(DRC). Hospital has 40 beds capacity. There is operation facility at the hospital as well as maternity clinic. The area called Hewa Bora is one of the new developments areas where there is no health facility around. Hewa Bora hospital will be run DWW local partner RADEM. Local dignitaries and DWW Chief Executive Dr Kani Torun attended the opening ceremony which was held on 17 June 2006. Please visit photo gallery to see the pictures of the hospital.

Doctors Worldwide has started a project to help internally displaced people in Katanga region in Congo (DRC). Mayi-mayi guerrillas started rebellion against central government in northern Katanga (Bukama and Malemba/Nkulu territories) three months ago.They burned the villages and killed hundreds of people. Many people have fled from them to safe parts of Bukama and Malemba/Nkulu territories. Government and UN forces made significant improvement recently and defeated guerrillas but they moved to north and still continue fighting.

Doctors Worldwide has started food distribution project in Democratic Republic of Congo. DWW has taken the opportunity to use Muslim religious festival Eid-ul Adha (sacrificing animals and distribute to poor following prophet Abraham's rituel) for food distribution in Congo (DRC). All the donation were collected from Turkey by DWW-Turkey and sent to Congo(DRC). Project started yesterday and will be completed in three days time. In total 2700 animals will be sacrificed and meat will be distributed in Katanga region as well as Goma and Kinshasa.

DWW has opened a new maternity clinic in Kamina in Democratic Republic of Congo. Kamina is 700 km north of Lubumbashi. It is very poor part of Katanga region. Population is around 115,000.

Congo (DRC) one of the highest rate maternal and child mortality rate country in the world. This new maternity clinic will serve free of charge for poor people and help to reduce the mortality rates. DWW will fund the expenses of the clinic.

In 2003, DoctorsWorldwide received an appeal from an NGO called RADEM based in Lubumbashi, the 'City of Peace'. Lubumbashi is the main city in Katanga region has a population of approximately 7.2 million, of which 1.5 million are children under five. The city itself has around 1.2 million population. There are also a large number of Internally Displaced People living in the area due to conflicts in the north-east of the country.
