This is a summary of what was said by UNHCR spokesperson Charlie Yaxley – to whom quoted text may be attributed – at today's press briefing at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

After months of conflict between the Hema and Lendu ethnic groups in eastern DR Congo’s Ituri region, a UNHCR team has recently been able to obtain access to the area where they met some of the 150,000 people formerly displaced people who are now returning in hope of finding their homes.

Nigeria: at W25, 828 cases were reported from 12 States. A National Emergency Operations Centre has been activated, and Rapid Response Teams deployed in Kano, Bauchi, Plateau, Zamfara, and Adamawa States.

Cameroon: between May 18th-July 9th, 38 cases (5 confirmed) and 4 deaths were reported from the North (see p. 2)

D. R. Congo: more than 500 cases reported at W25 and 26, despite an overall low completeness. The Grand Kasaï region gathers almost half of the total reported cases with a high lethality (see p. 2).

This dashboard contains the main findings obtained through the first round of DTM assessments that were conducted in the villages of the Tanganyika province, in Manono and Kalemie territories. Data was collected from the 22nd of February till the 16th of March 2018 within 116 health areas (aires de santé) in these two territories. A total of 1,065 villages have been evaluated through 2,941 key informants’ interviews, identifying 301,758 IDPs and 255,605 Returnees.

Forced displacement and Return movements in Lomami - Assessment Report

As a response to the humanitarian crisis that is currently affecting the Democratic Republic of Congo, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) launched Displacement Tracking Matrix exercises (DTM) in seven (7) provinces of the country in order to collect up-to-date information on forcibly displaced persons and returnees. These results will provide a better understanding of the displacement dynamics in DRC and support the humanitarian response.

There are no tents and tarpaulins for the roughly 300 people that live here – just a collection of tiny, tunnel-shaped huts tucked out of sight down a dirt track in this remote corner of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Rutshuru region.

Ebola epidemics are unlike anything seen before: The virus spreads rapidly, the disease is infectious and has a high mortality rate, and often there are widespread rumors, misconceptions and misinformation about the disease and how to prevent it are widespread.

Psychosocial support is vital to ensure the well-being of the affected population, and also to counter-act the threats to public health and safety that fear, stigmatization and misconception poses.
