CONFLICT between different ethnic groups which began in December 2018 has resulted in a large migration of people from the Maï-Ndombe region of the Democratic Republic of Congo into neighbouring Republic of Congo. Scores of people have died and around 7,000 people – including unaccompanied children, whose parents have been killed – have crossed the River Congo into the border settlements of Bétou and Makotipoko. The Salvation Army is providing practical, emotional and spiritual support.

The emergency and early recovery needs of returnees and host populations in the Republic of Congo remain critical in areas that have been cut off from humanitarian assistance over the past two years due to insecurity. As of 30 September 2018, more than 15,000 children aged 3 to 17 years are out of school and 118 schools have closed due to extensive damage to school infrastructure and the limited availability of teachers.1 Access to water and sanitation services is low, including in health facilities and schools, and the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sector remains underfunded.

Description of the disaster

On Tuesday, 24 July 2018, DRC’s Minister of Public Health, Oly Ilunga, declared the end of the Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak that had been plaguing the Equateur Province since May. No new confirmed case of EVD has been reported in this province in the 21 days of monitoring since the last case was found out. Indeed, the last confirmed Ebola patient had been recorded on 6 June and left the Bikoro Treatment Center in the DRC on 12 June 2018.
