GENEVA, Sept 3 (Reuter) - United Nations census takers at crowded Rwandan Hutu refugee camps in Zaire faced a boycott by refugees who feared indelible ink used on them for registration might make them sterile or help to identify them if t they went home, a U.N. spokesman said on Tuesday.
Ron Redmond, spokesman of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), told a news briefing the census at five camps where more than 700,000 Hutus are living in the Goma region in eastern Zaire was suspended on Monday, a day after the refugees refused to respond.

report LE SOIR Bruxelles

Two years after the genocide in Rwanda, Human Rights Watch and FIDH (Federation Internationale des Droits de l'Homme) charge the Zairian government with complicity in the ethnic violence in North Kivu in eastern Zaire, which has forced most of the Tutsi population in the region to flee to Rwanda. In Forced to Flee: Violence Against the Tutsis in Zaire, Human Rights Watch and FIDH describe the interethnic violence in the region since 1992, but focus on the recent wave of attacks against the Tutsis, which escalated in 1996.

GOMA: A View From The Field
CARE field worker Mark Richardson looks back on the cataclysmic events of last July and what it means to humanitarians worldwide.

GOMA, Zaire -- Driving north from town last week, I stopped the Land Rover after 20 minutes and went for a walk beside the road. The grass was long and coarse and wiry, the ground rough and uneven. I climbed to the top of a small mound and looked down at my feet. There was no trace of the thousands of people buried there.
