The Zairian government is attempting to ethnically cleanse eastern Zaire of Banyamulenge, ethnic Tutsi of Rwandan ancestry, who have lived in eastern Zaire for over 200 years. There are approximately 400,000 Banyamulenge living in the area between Bukavu and Uvira in eastern Zaire who are at risk. The international community, with strong U.S. leadership, must send a clear message that this is unacceptable. However, if there is an exodus, a rapid response is essential and adequate assistance and protection must be made available to help the vulnerable.
