■ On 4 September, UNHCR assisted two South Sudanese refugees in traveling to Khartoum, Sudan, to express their views on peace between warring factions, after they reached a deal in South Sudan. This initiative seeks to ensure refugees’ participation in the next steps of the peace process.

In Zambia, however, this belies price increases in pockets of areas which experienced a poor harvest. A look at the Alert for Price Spikes (ALPS) shows more markets in Zambia experiencing stress earlier this year.

-The Uganda Ministry of Health and partners have intensified preparedness and response interventions following a confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease in Tchomia health zone, near Lake Albert where the Democratic Republic of the Congo borders with Uganda.

  • Over 2,200 reports and questions on Ebola were received via SMS from U-Reporters. Most U-Reporters confirmed that they had heard about Ebola through radio, television, community awareness campaigns and posters.

• A total of 12,979 children (6,779 boys; 6,200 girls) accessed critical protection services, including temporary emergency shelter, psychosocial support, release from detention, family tracing and reunification, medical support, as well as access to education and reintegration opportunities.

• Since the beginning of the year, 37,786 children with severe acute malnutrition have been admitted and treated in 418 health facilities supported by UNICEF.

Situation Update

The Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in North Kivu and Ituri provinces, Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to be closely monitored, with the Ministry of Health (MoH), WHO and partners making progress in response to the outbreak. A recent increase in the incidence of new cases (Figure 1) reflects the multitude of challenges faced by response teams in recent weeks. The outbreak remains active predominantly in Beni Health Zone, although additional risks remain following the confirmation of EVD cases in Butembo and Mabalako.
