Situation Update

The Ministry of Health (MoH), WHO and partners continue to respond to the Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. By using proven public health measures as well as new tools at hand (immunization and therapeutics), WHO remains confident the outbreak can be contained and brought to an end, despite multifaceted challenges.

Refugees

  • An increasing number of Central African refugees are voicing their intention of returning to their country of origin, primarily to Bangui. 876 households (3,707 people) have so far indicated this intention in Boyabu, Inke and Mole camps (Nord and Sub-Ubangi provinces). UNHCR continues to collect intentions of return.

1. Highlights

  • On the 23 November 2018, the State Ministry of Health was notified of a suspected case of Ebola at the Sekure Payam, Nzara County. The suspect is a 25 years old farmer, who resides at “Hai Network” but travelled to Bangadi in the Democratic Republic of Congo on the 16 November 2018. He felt unwell on the 18 November 2018 with complains of fever, joint pain, vomiting of blood and diarrhoea.

Transition from EWARN to routine surveillance

A three days workshop was conducted in Damascus, Syria from 8-10 August 2018 to disseminate findings of Early Warning Alert and Response Network (EWARN) evaluation in Syria. Participants included Ministry of Health (MOH) staff and technical EWARN officers. During this workshop the question of how and when to transition from EWARN to routine surveillance was examined.

• A 5-day Integrated Rapid Response Mission in Baggari has been concluded.

• Conflict and insecurity through out the lean season push some 6.1 million people into hunger.

• Health partners intensified preparedness and response activities agaisnt Ebola in the wake of the Ebola Virus outbreak in DRC.

• Authorities in Greater Aweil area have reported that more than 20,500 households have been affected by floods in the area.

Highlights

  • Following the cease fire signed on December 2017, the security in the Pool Region has significantly improved and movement of return of displaced population started since then.

  • 37,108 children under five immunized against measles in Pool and Bouenza departments with UNICEF support.

  • As of 30 September, UNICEF HAC is only funded 33%. An additional US$ 6 million is required for UNICEF to meet the needs of vulnerable children and women, especially in the Education, Wash and Child Protection sectors.

139 asylum seekers arrived during the month of September of which 76.2% were from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The Zimbabwe Refugee Committee (ZRC) held its third session for Refugee Status Determination of 2018 from 3- 6 September 2018 at Tongogara.

The population verification exercise for the Zimbabwe operation that was scheduled from 1- 16 October was postponed due to the cholera epidemic

• Plus de 370 000 personnes sont retournées de l’Angola entre octobre et novembre dans cinq provinces de la République démocratique du Congo, selon les sources officielles. Des mouvements spontanés des personnes retournées sont de plus en plus observés en direction des grandes agglomérations.

• Selon une mission d’évaluation humanitaire, quelques 183 000 personnes seraient retournées vers la province du Kwango, contre 31 926 rapportées dans les statistiques officielles au 30 novembre.
