Message from our Regional Director

Despite numerous humanitarian challenges in 2017 in Africa, there were also a number of heart-warming accomplishments. A case in point, was when a local response of Red Crescent teams—and other partners—curbed Somalia's cholera outbreak through the power of local volunteers and shared international expertise. In terms of support to our members, 36 National Societies were able to kick start initiatives that built their capacity through seed grants.

HAUSSE DES ATTAQUES CONTRE LES ORGANISATIONS HUMANITAIRES
Entre janvier et août, 274 incidents touchant des organisations humanitaires et leur personnel ont été enregistrés dans le pays, soit en moyenne plus d’un incident par jour. Plus de 20 entrepôts et locaux de groupes d’aide ont été pillés, principalement dans les régions de Batangafo, Kaga Bandoro, Bambari et Bria, ce qui a entraîné la suspension des opérations de secours. Vingtcinq véhicules ont été volés au cours de la même période.

Spike in attacks against aid groups
Between January and August, 274 incidents affecting humanitarian organizations and their staff were recorded across the country, amounting to an average of more than one incident per day. Over 20 aid groups’ warehouses and premises were looted mainly in Batangafo, Kaga Bandoro, Bambarri and Bria areas, forcing the suspension of relief operations. Twenty-five vehicles were stolen in the same period.

Mauritania hosts over 2,362 urban refugees and asylumseekers and about 50,000 Malian refugees in Mbera, a camp established in 2012 in the arid south-eastern region close to the Malian border.

Despite the conclusion of a peace agreement in 2015, large-scale returns of Malian refugees are not expected due to persistent violence in northern Mali. In December alone, 104 new arrivals were registered in Mbera.

As the situation in northern Mali continues to be unstable, Mauritania struggles to cope with the growing needs of new refugees and the vulnerable host communities.

Despite the conclusion of a peace agreement in 2015, large-scale returns of Malian refugees are not expected due to persistent violence in northern Mali. In November alone, 482 new arrivals were registered in Mbera.

As the situation in northern Mali continues to be unstable, funding gaps may have a dire impact on the continuation of activities in 2018.
