La riposte à la flambée épidémique de maladie à virus Ebola (MVE) en République démocratique du Congo (RDC) s’est considérablement améliorée ces dernières semaines, notamment grâce à l’efficacité des équipes de vaccination sur le terrain et aux progrès de la participation communautaire et de la communication sur les risques dans les zones prioritaires. Toutefois, à mesure que de nouveaux cas continuent d’émerger à Beni et semblent plus près des «zones rouges» à haut risque, il est clair que des risques subsistent et qu’il est prioritaire de prendre des mesures de riposte énergiques.

1. Highlights

  • In response to the re-classification of South Sudan to “very high risk” from “high risk”, the WCO South Sudan has deployed members of staff to the prioritized states of Yambio, Yei, Torit (Nimule) and Wau to strengthen the EVD preparedness coordination with partners on ground and the national task force in Juba.

  • The WHO Representative to South Sudan, Dr Olushayo Olu led a team to Yambio to reinforce the WHO’s leadership in EVD preparedness activities in the state.

Ces incidents ont de graves répercussions tant sur les civils que sur les agents de première ligne, obligeant à suspendre les activités de riposte à la MVE et augmentant le risque que le virus continue de se propager.

A year-long program for adolescent girl refugees in Sub-Saharan Africa successfully promoted healthy transitions to adulthood within the evaluation period, according to the results of randomized controlled trials in Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The studies, which appear in BMJ: Global Health, were led by researchers in the Program on Forced Migration and Health at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.

Ms. Connors’ post was established by the UN Secretary-General in 2017, a year that saw 62 allegations of abuse by UN personnel.

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary‑General António Guterres:

The Secretary-General is outraged by the continued killing and abduction of civilians by armed groups in the Beni area of North Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He condemns Saturday's killing of at least 11 civilians, including one boy, as well as the injury and abduction of several more during an attack on the town of Mayongose on the outskirts of Beni.

The humanitarian needs in the DRC have reached alarming proportions. 2017 was one of the most violent years in history. According to the 2017 – 2019 HRP updated for 2018, 13.1 million people (including 7.7 million children) are in need of humanitarian assistance and protection. This constitutes nearly 14% of the total population of the country projected in 2018. The NFI / Shelter Cluster has thus far targeted 30% of people in need in 2018 – i.e. 825,552 persons (43 %) out of 1,930,572 persons in need.

This week, 1,179 people arrived on the Aegean islands, an increase from last week’s 654 arrivals and from last year’s 1,054 arrivals during the same period.

The average daily arrivals this week equalled 168, compared to 93 in the previous week.

Population on the Islands

Nearly 18,000 refugees and migrants reside on the Aegean islands. The majority of the population on the Aegean islands are from Afghanistan (27%), Iraq (21%) and Syria (17%).

The Commission is allocating an additional € 7.2 million to strengthen its response to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is not yet under control. Total EU response so far stands at € 12.83 million in 2018.

The EU funding will help partner organisations working on the ground to deploy extra capacities to the affected areas. It will improve surveillance and the capacity to trace victims of Ebola, notably early cases.

The current outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) poses a high risk of introduction into neighboring countries including Rwanda. An Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is likely spread over tens of kilometers.

Countries with land borders adjoining the DRC like Rwanda have been advised by the World Health Organization (WHO) to urgently strengthen their surveillance and alert systems for early detection of potential cases, and overall preparedness for timely and effective response.
