Saving lives through SAFE cooking
WFP works to ensure that the food assistance provided can be consumed as safely and nutritiously as possible. While cooking may be thought of as a safe activity, in many circumstances, especially humanitarian settings, it poses serious health, safety and environmental risks. In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), internally displaced populations are facing severe challenges related to the lack of access to cooking fuel. Most households depend largely on firewood and charcoal for domestic energy needs, including cooking.

This Emergency Appeal seeks 1,996,294 Swiss francs to support the Democratic Republic of Congo Red Cross (DRC RC) to assist some 244,300 people for 9 months in Lomami province, which is concomitantly affected by population movement and a cholera outbreak. While a multi-sector needs assessment carried out in three provinces impacted by the Kasaï crisis (Lomami, Sankuru and Kwilu) suggested a wide range of priorities, given the operational challenges, the proposed approach under this Emergency Appeal is to start with a community health response to the cholera outbreak in Lomami.

NEW YORK, 28 December 2017 – Children in conflict zones around the world have come under attack at a shocking scale throughout the year, UNICEF warned today, with parties to conflicts blatantly disregarding international laws designed to protect the most vulnerable.
“Children are being targeted and exposed to attacks and brutal violence in their homes, schools and playgrounds,” said Manuel Fontaine, UNICEF Director of Emergency Programmes. “As these attacks continue year after year, we cannot become numb. Such brutality cannot be the new normal.”

ABA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO — Since South Sudan's government captured a rebel base last week in the country's southwest, hundreds of refugees have poured into Democratic Republic of Congo.
Among them may be rebels, and the Congolese army, wary of conflict spilling into their nation, is arresting any suspected fighters.
Refugees, however, say innocent young men are being caught up in the crackdown, too.
