After years of calm, Katanga has become a powderkeg, like other provinces in the eastern part of the DRC. With some 580,000 internally displaced people and about 300,000 returnees since March 2013, Katanga is, after the two Kivus, the third most affected province by displacements.

Today the UN established the Ebola Response Multi-Partner Trust Fund, which will ensure a coherent UN System contribution to the overall Ebola outbreak response. The Fund will be guided by the priorities set out in the OCHA appeal document, launched on 16 September in Geneva by Valerie Amos, and amounting to nearly US$ 1 billion. The Trust Fund seeks contributions from Member States, regional legislative bodies, inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations, businesses and individuals.

The DRC Common Humanitarian Fund (CHF) in 2013 The Common Humanitarian Fund in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, commonly known as the Pooled Fund, (hereafter referred to as the CHF), continues to be an integral element of the humanitarian financing mechanism. During 2013 total contributions to the CHF, including USD 28 million in carryover from the previous year represented 13% of contributions received in response to the Humanitarian Action Plan for the same year.

oPT: 178 Palestinians have been killed since the launch of Israel’s Operation Protective Edge on 8 July. Around 17,000 people have sought shelter in UNRWA schools. Rockets from Syria and Lebanon have hit the north of Israel, raising fears of the conflict spreading.

Democratic Republic of Congo: More than 30,000 people are estimated to have been displaced in North Kivu, South Kivu, and Katanga in June, due to FARDC military operations and fighting between armed groups.

In the same year, the United States alone contributed about $2 billion in foreign assistance to the country. While the elections in 2011 were a step forward, 54 armed groups remain active in the DRC’s eastern provinces.
