Flooding continues in Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Sudan while Senegal, Ethiopia, and Cote d’Ivoire remain dry

  1. A poor start to the rainfall season across Senegal and the Gambia has resulted in abnormal dryness.

  2. Heavy rainfall last week, following a wet weather pattern in July, caused flash flooding in Sierra Leone. Continued heavy rainfall will maintain a high flood risk.

  3. Fewer rainy days in southern Cote d’Ivoire has resulted in abnormal dryness. More seasonal rainfall is forecast next week.

Abnormal dryness persists in parts of Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire, Nigeria, and Cameroon

  1. A delayed rainy season followed by poorly distributed rainfall in southern Senegal has maintained abnormally dry conditions.

  2. Central Nigeria received heavy rainfall last week which is expected to relieve the abnormally dry conditions that have developed over the past two months.

  3. Heavy rainfall along the coast of Cameroon is likely to provide relief to abnormal dryness that has developed over the past two months.

Northern Mozambique remains at risk for flooding following heavy rainfall from Tropical Cyclone Kenneth

  1. Seasonal rainfall deficits since October have resulted in significant dryness across Angola, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

  2. Continued below-average rainfall and high temperatures have strengthened dryness in South Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Somalia, and Tanzania.

  3. Tropical Cylcone Kenneth made landfall over northern Mozambique last week. Heavy flooding is expected to persist into early may with continued rainfall.

Poor rainfall since late January strengthens dryness across southern Africa

Africa Weather Hazards

  1. Significantly below average rainfall since October has caused significant dryness in southern Africa. Dry spells continue in Namibia and Angola.

  2. Below-average rainfall since Nobember has caused drought in South Africa, though there has been recent moisture improvement.

  3. Since late January, below average seasonal rainfall has caused abnormal dryness in parts of Madagascar and Mozambique.
