In Papua New Guinea, a third case of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 1 (cVDPV1) has been confirmed, from a newly-infected province (Enga province). Emergency outbreak response is being enhanced and reviewed, including to potentially expand vaccination geographically. As wars dragged on in many parts of the world, huge numbers of people struggled to meet even their most basic needs in 2017. In the absence of political solutions, these people seem destined to endure even more violence in the coming year. If humanitarian organizations cannot rise to the challenge and provide greater relief and protection, even more people could suffer.

Sexual violence and abuse are beginning to be recognised as a major problem across the international aid industry. According to the ‘Report the Abuse’ survey, 86% of aid workers know a colleague who has experienced sexual violence associated with their work. Yet sexual violence in humanitarian settings is rarely reported as a security incident. Aid agencies are not reporting sexual violence numbers.
