D. R. Congo: continuing decrease in Kasai Oriental but lethality still high. The overall situation is still concerning.

Niger: Encouraging decrease in the number of new cases over the past two weeks. However, the risk of further propagation remains high as border districts are still affected.

Clarifying the roles of the African Union (AU) and subregional organisations is a central element of the AU reforms. It is key in terms of managing expectations about what the AU can or cannot do, as well as coordinating Africa’s responses to avoid duplication of efforts. But this issue is also divisive, and it is unclear whether AU member states will reach a concrete decision on a division of labour at the upcoming extraordinary summit on reforms in Addis Ababa on 17 November.

CONFLICT AND HUNGER - FACTS & FIGURES

Of the more than 800 million hungry (i.e. chronically food insecure) people in the world, about 490 million live in countries affected by conflict. That’s 60 percent of the world’s hungry people.

Six out of 10 people facing acute food insecurity are in countries plagued by conflict or insecurity (in other words, more than half of the 124 million acutely hungry people living in 51 countries are in parts of the world where there is fighting or violence).

ARMED RAIDERS KILL SIX CIVILIANS

Armed attackers killed six civilians in two separate raids on villages in Cameroon’s Far North Region on 27 and 30 September. The villages are in Kolofata locality which suffers near-daily armed attacks, claiming lives and uprooting civilians. Despite the raids, displaced families keep returning home for safety near military bases and to their farms to grow food. Kolofata is home to 12,000 displaced people and another 14,500 who have returned from displacement.
