Entre conflits régionaux de longue durée au Moyen-Orient et en Afrique et incidence grandissante du changement climatique sur la planète, les crises humanitaires s'aggravent, tandis que les combats compromettent le bon acheminement de l'aide aux plus nécessiteux.

From long-lasting conflicts in the Middle East and Africa, to the growing impact of climate change worldwide, humanitarian crises are worsening and conflict threatens aid delivery to those most in need.

Overview

So far in 2018, a total of 32,494 refugees and migrants arrived in Greece by sea. The majority are from Afghanistan (26%), Syria (24%) and Iraq (18%). More than half of the population are women (23%) and children (37%), while 40% are men.

Arrivals in December 2018, at 2,927 increased in comparison to November, when 2,075 people arrived on the islands. Arrivals during 2018 are 9% higher than those in 2017.

323 people arrived on the Aegean islands, an increase from last week’s 283 arrivals but a decrease from last year’s 391 arrivals during the same period.

The average daily arrivals this week equalled 46, compared to 40 in the previous week.

Population on the Islands

Over 14,400 refugees and migrants reside on the Aegean islands. The majority of the population on the Aegean islands are from Afghanistan (36%), Iraq (16%) and Syria (11%).

At the end of December 2018, 21 Humanitarian Response Plans (HRP) and the Syria Regional Response Plan (3RP) required US$24.93 billion to assist 97.9 million people in urgent need of humanitarian support. The requirements remained unchanged as of the end of November 2018. The plans are funded at $14.58 billion which amounts to 58.5 per cent of financial requirements for 2018. Notably, the percentage of total funding contributed through humanitarian response plans carried out by the UN with partners in 2018 is estimated at 62.9%.

This week, 301 people arrived on the Aegean islands, a decrease from last week’s 495 arrivals and from last year's 622 arrivals during the same period.

The average daily arrivals this week equalled 43, compared to 71 in the previous week.

The recruitment and use of children remains a hallmark of war and the UN Secretary-General’s 2018 annual report, released in June, listed 56 non-state armed groups and seven state armed forces for recruiting and using child soldiers in 2017.

  • As of 1 January 2019, WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has taken over as the Chair of the Polio Oversight Board. Starting on 4 January, accompanied by Dr Al Mandhari, RD/EMRO, Dr Tedros’ first trip will be to Kabul, Afghanistan and Islamabad, Pakistan to meet with Heads of State and polio teams to reinvigorate support for polio eradication.

INTRODUCTION

Linking conflict, violence and exploitation

In 2016, more countries were experiencing some form of violent conflict than at any other time in the previous 30 years.1 People living in conflict-affected areas may experience abuse, violence and exploitation, including trafficking in persons. The risk of trafficking in persons is also connected with the high numbers of refugees. A need to flee war and persecution may be taken advantage of for exploitation by traffickers.

The projected size of each country’s acutely food insecure population (IPC Phase 3 and higher) is compared to last year and the recent five-year average and categorized as Higher, Similar, or Lower. Countries where external emergency food assistance needs are anticipated are identified. Projected lean season months highlighted in red indicate either an early start or an extension to the typical lean season.
