Thank you for the opportunity to bring this under-reported crisis to your attention.

Cameroon, one of the largest economies in Africa, is facing worsening violence and conflict. Today, 4.3 million people need humanitarian assistance across the country. That is a 30 per cent increase on last year and it means one Cameroonian in six needs humanitarian assistance and protection. More than half of them are children.

Highlights

• Since August 2018, UNICEF has provided its assistance to more than 133,000 people in the North West and South West regions.

• In March, 3,000 families in the North West and South West regions have received Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLIN).

• UNICEF supported the Ministry of Public Health to conduct a measles campaign in March and vaccinated 81,391 children aged 9-59 months in Logone and Chari division (Far North region).

Ouvert depuis juillet 2013 pour répondre à l’afflux massif des réfugiés nigérians vers le Cameroun, le camp de Minawao continu de recevoir un nombre journalièrement considérable des nouveaux arrivants.

Du 1 er janvier au 31 mars 2019, plus de 1 779 nouveaux arrivants ont été enregistrés au camp de Minawao.

En date du 31 mars 2019, la population totale du camp s’élève à 57 497 réfugiés nigérians. 61% de la population a moins de 18 ans et les femmes/filles représentent 53% de la population totale du camp.

HIGHLIGHTS

• The 2019 Humanitarian Response Plan for Cameroon was launched on 20 February. The response to the crisis in the NorthWest and South-West will aim to assist 820,000 people, targeting five times more people than the 2018 Emergency Response Plan.

• The situation in February further deteriorated as violence and ‘lockdowns’ compounded humanitarian challenges.

• Schools and Hospitals were particularly affected by incidents of kidnapping and arson.

Highlights

  • UNICEF established its office in Buea to reinforce its programmes in the North West and South West regions. Since August 2018,
    UNICEF has reached 83,823 people in these regions, including hard-to-reach areas.

  • In January, approximately 35,000 Nigerian asylum seekers arrived in Logone and Chari division (Far North region). UNICEF plans to conduct needs assessment of children and provide multisectoral responses in collaboration with national and humanitarian actors.

Aujourd’hui, nous lançons le Plan de réponse humanitaire pour 2019 qui nécessite $299 millions de dollars afin de venir en aide à 2,3 millions de personnes.

836 refugee students have received cash for education support to facilitate school enrolment and retention in Calabar and Adagom settlement (Cross River state).

UNHCR completed the construction of two blocks of nine classrooms to increase learning space for refugees and host community pupils in Adagom (Ogoja, Cross River state).

8,031 refugees have been enrolled into the health insurance scheme, to improve health care delivery for refugees in Adagom and Anyake settlements (Cross River and Benue states).

  • Cameroon currently has 1,214,714 people of concern, including 275,711 Central African and 138,315 Nigerian refugees.

  • From 30-31 January, Volker Türk, UNHCR’s Assistant High Commissioner for Protection, undertook an official visit to Yaoundé, Cameroon.

  • Since 27 January, some 35,000 Nigerian nationals have crossed the border into Cameroon seeking refuge after fleeing the town of Rann.

UNHCR coordinates protection and assistance for persons of concern in collaboration with:
