Highlights in March and April

• In March and April, deportations of sub-Saharan migrants and refugees by Algerian authorities increased at the border with Mali and Niger. According to the Algerian Minister of the Interior and local authorities Nourredine Bedaoui, 27,000 Sub-Saharans have been expelled from Algeria since 2015.

• According to IOM, the number of migrants in transit in Segedine and coming out of Niger increased significantly in March and April, with 4,284 people identified in March and 4,395 in April, compared to 851 in February.

Geneva – As the Aquarius rescue vessel makes the three-day journey to Spain, IOM, the UN Migration Agency, reports that 35,504 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea as of Sunday, 10 June 2018. This compares with 73,748 arrivals across the region during the same period last year. So far this month, 2,746 arrivals to Italy, Greece and Spain have been recorded, the majority of which arrived in Spain. The 14,330 migrants, who are registered as having arrived by sea to Italy this year is 76.81 per cent lower than that reported last year in the same period, which was recorded as 61,779.

En 2017, la mission de l’OIM Niger a recueilli les témoignages de près de 9 100 migrants assistés dans quatre localités au Niger (Agadez, Arlit, Dirkou et Niamey), ainsi qu’à Diffa et Zinder. Ces migrants ont souvent échoué dans leur parcours migratoire, ont vécu des situations difficiles, et n’ont souvent plus les moyens financiers pour rentrer chez eux. La majorité des migrants arrivant dans les centres de transit de l’OIM Niger ont séjourné en Algérie, en Libye, ou dans d’autres pays voisins du Niger.

Libya continues to be the main transit point for departure from North Africa towards Europe. UNHCR's interventions at disembarkation points in Libya focus on the provision of life-saving assistance and protection monitoring, to identify persons in need of international protection, as well as vulnerable individuals, such as unaccompanied and separated children, elderly, medical cases, women at risk or victims of trafficking. UNHCR through its partner International Medical Corps provides medical services and core relief items.
