The Hindu Kush Himalayan region has been hit hard by the impact of climate change. To help the local people successfully adapt to this new reality, the SDC is supporting the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), based in Kathmandu, Nepal. The organisation provides eight countries in the region with a platform for creating and adopting new approaches to sustainable mountain development.

Yemen is facing an acute humanitarian crisis after nearly three years of civil war, with more than 10,000 deaths and three-quarters of the country’s population in dire need of humanitarian assistance. Although eschewing a leadership role, China has supported regional and international efforts to mitigate the conflict in Yemen and has supplied the country with humanitarian aid. This Peace Brief discusses China’s diplomatic efforts in Yemen’s transition and peace process and its potential role in postwar reconstruction.

WUHAN, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Floods on the Yangtze River, China's longest, had left 161 dead and 20 missing as of Oct. 31 last year, the least casualties since 2000, the Yangtze River Water Resources Commission has said.

Direct economic losses caused by floods reached 93.9 billion yuan (14.4 billion U.S. dollars) last year, according to the commission.

Scientific control and effective rescue efforts had avoided heavier losses, said Wang Hui, spokesperson for the commission based in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei Province.

China partners with UNDP to provide post-flood recovery assistance to over 31,800 households in affected areas of Terai

The Government of the People’s Republic of China has partnered with UNDP Nepal to provide US$ four million to support recovery efforts in Nepal’s Terai region affected by one of the worst floods in recent history. The assistance provided under the framework of the Chinese South South Cooperation Assistance Fund, will reach 31,800 households in Sunsari, Saptari, Sarlahi, Dhanusha, Mahottari, Rautahat and Parsa districts of Provinces 1 and 2.

BEIJING, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's meteorological authority renewed a yellow alert on Thursday for a cold front in central and eastern regions.

Alerts for a cold wave have lasted five consecutive days, according to the National Meteorological Center (NMC).

From Thursday evening to Friday, the temperature is expected to drop moderately in regions along and south of the Yellow and Huaihe rivers, the NMC said.

Meanwhile, low temperatures in parts of Shandong, Henan and Anhui will reach minus 10 to minus 12 degrees Celsius Friday morning.

XINING, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Northwest China's plateau province of Qinghai last year reported the second highest temperature since records began in 1961.

The average temperature was 3.5 degrees Celsius in 2017, 1.2 degrees Celsius higher than normal, said the Qinghai Meteorological Service.

The average temperature between December 2016 and February 2017 was minus 6.7 degrees Celsius, the warmest winter since 1961, the agency said.

The year of 2016 was the warmest year since 1961 with 3.7 degrees Celsius in average temperature.

BEIJING, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- China's meteorological authority on Monday renewed a blue alert, the lowest level in a four-tier warning system, for a cold front in some central, southern and northeastern regions.

From Monday to Tuesday, the temperature is expected to drop by 6 to 8 degrees Celsius in central, southern, and northeastern China, including parts of Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia and Yunnan.

BEIJING, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Heavy snow has continued to cause havoc in parts of China, disrupting traffic and bringing low temperatures.

Nineteen expressways in northeast China's Liaoning Province have been closed or controlled since snow started Sunday night, according to local transport authorities.

The snow will result in icy roads, the local observatory forecast Monday morning. Following the snow, Liaoning will see temperatures plunge by up to 10 degrees Celsius, the observatory said.

BEIJING, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Snow has killed 21 people in central and eastern China since Jan. 2, according to the China National Commission for Disaster Reduction.

Heavy snowfall has damaged houses, agriculture and power facilities in the provinces of Anhui, Jiangsu, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Shaanxi, Shanxi, and Chongqing Municipality, it said.

More than 3,700 people have been relocated and 14,000 are in need of emergency assistance, said the commission, noting that over 700 houses had collapsed and nearly 2,800 were damaged.

Health threats reported in 2017

In 2017, a variety of emerging and reemerging infectious disease threats were reported in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR). Most of the threats began in 2016, including chikungunya in Pakistan, or were already endemic in the country, for example, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) in Afghanistan. However, new threats, such as diphtheria in Yemen, have also been observed this year.

BEIJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- China's meteorological authority on Sunday renewed a blue alert, the lowest level in a four-tier warning system, for heavy rain in some southern regions.

From Sunday to 8 p.m. Monday, heavy rain is expected in southern China, including parts of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and provinces of Guangdong, Hunan, Jiangxi and Fujian, the National Meteorological Center (NMC) said.

Those areas will see rain of up to 80 millimeters within 24 hours.

HEFEI, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Heavy snow has killed 13 people in east China's Anhui Province since Jan. 3, the provincial government announced on Friday.

The worst snowstorms since 2008 have so far affected 1.06 million people in the province, causing direct economic losses of 1.26 billion yuan (190 million U.S. dollars), and 790 million yuan (122 million U.S. dollars) of losses in agriculture.

Nine cities including capital Hefei initiated emergency responses due to the snow.

As of 26 December 2017, a total of 3,195 suspected dengue cases were reported in 2017. The total number of reported dengue cases, including dengue haemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome was lower than the 3 year-threshold of the same period from 2014-2016 (Figure 1).
