SYNOPSIS OF TROPICAL STORM BERYL

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, Florida, as of 2:00 PM (AST) on July 08, 2018, Beryl continues to move WNW towards the Lesser Antilles with no change in strength. Beryl or its remnants is forecast to approach the Lesser Antilles this evening, Sunday July 08, and cross the island chain tonight.

SYNOPSIS OF TROPICAL STORM BERYL:

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, Florida, as of 11:00 AM (AST) on July 07, 2018, Beryl, the second (2nd) named storm of the 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season, was downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm. As of 8:00 PM the center of Beryl, was located at 12.9N and 53.5W about 550 miles (885km) ESE of the Lesser Antilles with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (85 km/h) and a minimum central pressure of 1003 mb. The present movement of Beryl is West-North-West or 295o at 17 mph (28 km/h).

Thursday, October 26, 2017 — CARICOM and Mexico, which both recently suffered devastating natural disasters, have agreed to strengthen cooperation in disaster risk management.

The agreement forms part of a Joint Declaration issued at the end of the Fourth CARICOM-Mexico Summit held in Belize on Wednesday 25 October 2017 under the joint chairmanship of CARICOM Chairman, Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell of Grenada and the President of Mexico, Enrique Pena Nieto.

Maria, the 13th named storm of the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season, became a category 5 hurricane near the Leeward Islands on Monday September 18th, 2017. Hurricane Maria impacted Dominica at approximately 9:35pm on September 18th as an extremely strong hurricane with wind speeds of 155 mph. Maria then impacted Antigua and Barbuda, Montserrat and St. Kitts and Nevis on September 19th, 2017 and the Virgin Islands September 19 – 20, 2017.

Damaged homes, businesses and offices are no match for the resilience and determination of residents living in Portsmouth, a town on the northwest coast of Dominica.

They have already begun to pick up the pieces after the category five-Hurricane Maria slammed into the island on September 18.

The residents have been using their personal vehicles to free the roadways, clogged with debris left behind by the hurricane, while at least one other ensured that his community was well lit at night through the use of his generator.

The First Secretary of State, Damian Green, chaired a COBR meeting this afternoon to discuss the Government’s response to Hurricane Irma and preparations for Hurricane Maria.

We remain concerned that Hurricane Maria, which is strengthening as it approaches the Leeward Islands, could hit the UK’s Overseas Territories in the Caribbean already affected as well as Montserrat.

FCO, DFID and military teams are working closely with the Governors in the Overseas Territories to ensure we are doing all we can to support the Governments of the islands affected.
