The Americas regional office of the Secretariat of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies covers 35 countries from North American to South America and the Caribbean islands – countries and regions that are highly diverse in political and socio-economic terms, geography, demography and culture, as well as public health trends and proneness to natural disasters. Membership services and programme support to the National Societies are therefore to be adapted to the real needs and local specifics.

In 2013, key programmes and activities of the Barbados Red Cross Society (BRCS) were affected due to lack of funding after the completion of the ECHO-funded DIPECHO VIII disaster risk reduction project and the consequent end of contracts for Disaster Management personnel. Due to the national economic situation the project could no longer continue due to lack of funding. Even community activities which began under DIPECHO VIII were significantly cut back.

1. Who are we?

The Caribbean Regional Representation Office (CRRO) is based in Trinidad and Tobago and is one of the two regional extension offices of the Americas Zone that delivers secretariat services to its member National Societies. It is staffed by a regional representative, and provides finance, human resources and programme coordination support to the 13 Anglophone National Societies of the region.

The IFRC`s Caribbean Disaster Risk Management Resource Centre (CADRIM) located in the building of the National Society headquarters, continues to provide a source of expertise, profile-building, much needed income and capacity building. The ECHO-funded DIPECHO VIII disaster risk reduction project is providing support for the Disaster Management Programme, including staff of the Barbados Red Cross for 2012.

The ECHO-funded DIPECHO VIII disaster risk reduction project was the main activity of the National Society during 2012. It provided a continuing opportunity to work with local communities in addressing the needs for disaster preparedness and resilience-building, especially considering the risk of hurricane impact in this region, as well as to maintain the working relationship with government departments.
