CDERA and partners deploying immediate assistance

TIME: 7:30 pm

Barbados, Sep 07, 2004 (CDERA) -- Grenada, a member state of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency (CDERA) was severely impacted by Hurricane Ivan. Three people are confirmed dead.

The Capital St Georges suffered incalculable damage. The Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) and the residence of Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell were destroyed.

At 11.00am the National Hurricane Centre advised that Huricane Ivan was located at 11.8N and 60.2W. moving toward the West near 18 mph. Maximum sustained winds were 115 mph and minimum central pressure at 963 mb.

A hurricane warning remains in effect for Trinidad and Tobago, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada and its dependencies. Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for Barbados , Martinique and St.

1. A hurricane warning is in effect for Barbados, Grenada, Saint Lucia, St Vincent, as of 11 am.A warning means that hurricane force conditions are expected to be experienced in the warning areas within 24 hours.

1. Tropical Storm Ivan has strengthen overnight to become a category one hurricane.

2. The forecast path of Hurricane Ivan makes it a potential threat to the islands of the Eastern Caribbean early this week.

3. CDERA has advised its Eastern Caribbean member states - especially Grenada, St Vincent, Barbados, Saint Lucia, and Dominica - to activate their national preparedness plans.

4. At 5 am Hurricane Ivan was located near 9.7 north and 44.3 west or 1210 miles east-southeast of the Windward Islands.

Message: HURRICANE WATCH ISSUED FOR BARBADOS

The Event: The Government of Barbados has issued a Hurricane Watch for this island. At 17:00 hrs Eastern Caribbean Time, Hurricane Ivan was approximately 820 miles East-Southeast of Barbados. The system is currently moving in a west-north-westerly direction at 21mph with maximum sustained winds of 125mph (205km).

The Prognosis: On its present track, and forward speed, Ivan, a Category 3 hurricane, is estimated to affect Barbados by midday on Tuesday September 07, 2004.

The Event: At 13:00hrs Eastern Caribbean Time Hurricane Ivan was approximately 895 miles East-Southeast of Barbados. The system is currently moving in a westerly direction at 21mph with maximum sustained winds of 115mph.

The Prognosis: On its present track and forward speed, it is estimated that Hurricane Ivan will approach the Barbados local area within the next 45 hours. The island would commence experiencing Tropical Storm Force winds by late Monday evening September 6, 2004.

1. Tropical Storm Ivan has continued to strengthen overnight and expecting to continue strengthening in an uninterrupted manner;

2. There is no threat to any land mass at this time;

3. At 5 am the center was estimated to be located near 9.0 degrees north and 37.4 degrees west or 1670 miles east-southeast of the Southern Windward Islands. The sustained wind speed is estimated to be 60 mph and continued strengthening is expected. It is moving at 18 mph towards the west;
