Hurricane Emily - The Caribbean

Hurricane Emily was (and continues to be) an unpredictable storm from the very beginning. Early reports said Emily would pass the through the Caribbeanislands as a disorganized tropical storm. On the afternoon of July 13, 2005, Hurricane warnings were downgraded to Tropical Storm warnings, applying to Barbados, Tobago, Grenada, the Grenadines, St. Vincent, St. Lucia and the northern coast of Venezuela. Significant rainfall and high winds near 60 mph were expected on several islands. However, in a matter of hours, Emily turned into a category 1 hurricane and later hit Grenada.

Hurricanes currently beating down on several Caribbean countries are a major concern to the Organization of American States, with Secretary General José Miguel Insulza today expressing sympathy over the loss of life in Haiti and other countries in the Caribbean. Particular concern was expressed over the impact of hurricane Emily on Grenada.

The Secretary General said the OAS has already begun consultations with the mechanisms of the inter-American system and with other key international bodies to determine what assistance can be rendered.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, July 13 (Reuters) - The fifth storm of the Atlantic hurricane season grew into a hurricane on Wednesday as it churned through the Windward Islands of the eastern Caribbean.

Emily's sustained winds hit 90 mph (144 kph) as it approached Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines and threatened Venezuela and the Netherlands Antilles.

At 11 p.m. EDT on Wednesday (0300 GMT on Thursday), the center of Hurricane Emily was about 45 miles (72 km) east-southeast of Grenada and moving to the west at 18 mph (29 kph), the U.S.

The Event

Tropical Depression #5 formed Sunday night July 10, 2005 and advisories were initiated by the National Hurricane Centre at 11 pm. At 5 am on July 11, 2005 the tropical depression was upgraded to Tropical Storm Emily which slowly strengthened to become a strong tropical storm as it approached the Windward Islands on the afternoon of Wednesday July 13, 2005.
