BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Sept 24 (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Lili weakened rapidly on Tuesday as it marched through the eastern Caribbean on a course for Haiti on the island of Hispaniola.

In Barbados, hit by Lili on Monday, officials said 139 homes were badly damaged.

Tropical Storm Lili, the 12th named Tropical System for the 2002 Atlantic Hurricane Season traversed the central Windward Islands on Monday, September 23, 2002, causing damage in Barbados, Grenada, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Saint Lucia.

Storm force winds and heavy rains throughout much of Monday (23/9) and the early hours of Tuesday (24/9) morning impacted all parishes in Barbados but more so the parishes along the Southern and Western Coasts.

Impacting the Windwards

At 11:00am Eastern Caribbean Time today September 23, 2002, the poorly defined center of Tropical Depression 13 was located at 12.8N 59.5W or approximately 20 miles SSE of Barbados. A Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect for the Lesser Antilles from Guadeloupe to the Grenadines including Barbados. Barbados at this time is experiencing wind gusts of approximately 55mph.

Forecasts for the 2002 Atlantic hurricane season indicate average to above average total activity, potentially triggering a humanitarian disaster of significant magnitude.

USAID is prepared to respond to major hurricanes in Latin America and the Caribbean.
