BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Sept 24 (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Lili weakened rapidly on Tuesday as it marched through the eastern Caribbean on a course for Haiti on the island of Hispaniola.

In Barbados, hit by Lili on Monday, officials said 139 homes were badly damaged.

Storm force winds and heavy rains throughout much of Monday (23/9) and the early hours of Tuesday (24/9) morning impacted all parishes in Barbados but more so the parishes along the Southern and Western Coasts.

Impacting the Windwards

At 11:00am Eastern Caribbean Time today September 23, 2002, the poorly defined center of Tropical Depression 13 was located at 12.8N 59.5W or approximately 20 miles SSE of Barbados. A Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect for the Lesser Antilles from Guadeloupe to the Grenadines including Barbados. Barbados at this time is experiencing wind gusts of approximately 55mph.

Washington, D.C. - At the commencement of National Hurricane Awareness Week (May 19 -25), the U.S. Agency for International Development's (USAID) 2002 hurricane season preparations are well underway for what is expected to be an active hurricane season. Forecasts for the 2002 Atlantic hurricane season indicate average to above average total activity, potentially triggering a humanitarian disaster of significant magnitude.

USAID is prepared to respond to major hurricanes in Latin America and the Caribbean.
