  • Durante el mes de octubre, la FAO publicó las nuevas cifras de subnutrición en el mundo. De acuerdo a éstas, hoy existen 868 millones de personas que pasan hambre a nivel mundial y 49 millones de personas en igual condición en América Latina y el Caribe. Si bien esta cifra representa un avance en la región respecto al trienio previo (2007-09) el ritmo de reducción de la subnutrición se ha reducido como consecuencia de las crisis económicas de los últimos años.

Barbados has come in for high praise for its efforts in mitigating and reducing the impacts of climate change, particularly along its coasts.

But, at the same time the country's leaders are being encouraged to adopt similar approaches in dealing with the impact of harmful emissions such as fossil fuels.

These accolades and advice were given by Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Christiana Figueres, after an all-day tour along Barbados' coasts yesterday.

Tuesday, May 22 - The United Nations Development Programme for Barbados and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), through its Regional Risk Reductive Initiative (R3i), is hosting a three-day capacity building workshop to train participants in the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for disaster management, land use planning and development.

GIS Officers Kahrim Skelton of the Town and Country Planning Department and Dillon Robin from the Water and Sewerage Department are participating in the workshop which commenced on Monday in the Cayman Islands.

In the Caribbean, more people have died from tsunamis than from hurricanes in the last 168 years. And, Deputy Director of the Coastal Zone Management Unit (CZMU), Dr. Lorna Inniss, attributed this to residents placing more emphasis on protecting life and property from wind damage, than from water damage, and a general lack of preparation.

She was at the time addressing the Christ Church West District Emergency Organisation on the topic: Are You Ready For A Disaster Like A Hurricane or Tsunami?, at the Accra Beach Hotel and Spa last Saturday.

Bridgetown, Barbados, February 3, 2012 (CDEMA) ‐ The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency, in collaboration with the national disaster offices of Belize, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Saint Lucia, has organised a series of capacity building workshops to address disaster risk reduction related to the safety of schools and to the agriculture sector.

The workshops are supported under the CARICOM/Brazil/FAO Cooperation Programme on disaster risk reduction and the first of these was held in Belize during the week of January 24 to 27, 2012.
