Representatives of small island States took to the podium at the General Assembly today to exhort the world to pay greater attention to their vulnerability to climate change, stressing that sustainable development will not be possible as rising sea levels threaten to swamp them.

From the Caribbean to the Pacific to the Atlantic, the small island countries said the world was not moving quickly enough to either mitigate the effects of climate change or support the poorest countries as they tried to adapt to them.

With the hurricane season officially under way in June, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and Water Resource Management is making every effort to ensure this island's food and fisheries infrastructure are secure in the event of a natural disaster.

As part of their remit, the Ministry advises and assists farmers in safeguarding their livestock and assists the fishing community in hauling vessels to safe areas prior to the impact of a major disaster or weather system.

One of the newly launched Constituency Councils is already making strides to ensure that its residents are prepared this hurricane season.

The St. Michael North East Constituency Council has implemented a clean-up campaign following concerns raised recently during their community walk-throughs. The venture involves the clearing of drains and the removal of waste to allow the easy flow of water, and to prevent occurrences of dengue fever and leptospirosis. There will also be removal of trees from selected areas.

The United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) is part of the international emergency response system for sudden-onset emergencies.
UNDAC was created in 1993. It is designed to help the United Nations and governments of disaster-affected countries during the first phase of a sudden-onset emergency. UNDAC also assists in the coordination of incoming international relief at national level and/or at the site of the emergency.

Message: Early morning rains (April 12, 2011) cause flooding in Barbados, Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Virgin Islands is monitoring the weather conditions.

Event:

The Meteorology Office has advised that a low level trough in the vicinity of the Southern Lesser Antilles is creating unstable weather conditions. This has led to torrential rains in the Windward Islands. CDEMA has received reports of flooding in some areas of Barbados, Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Landslides have also been reported in Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
