2016 was a challenging year for human rights and democracy, with a shrinking space for civil society and complex humanitarian and political crises emerging. Irma, the most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic Ocean, caused extensive damage to the islands of the Eastern Caribbean, with the islands of Barbuda and Anguilla worst hit. Almost 20,000 children and adolescents are estimated to have been affected on these islands.
