  • The third meeting of the Emergency Committee (EC) convened by the Director-General under the International Health Regulations (2005) regarding microcephaly, other neurological disorders and Zika virus was held by teleconference on 14 June 2016. The committee concurred with the international scientific consensus that Zika virus is a cause of microcephaly and GBS, and, consequently, that Zika virus infection and its associated congenital and other neurological disorders is a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

From 1 January 2007 to 20 April 2016, Zika virus transmission was documented in a total of 66 countries and territories.

Mosquito-borne transmission:

  • 42 countries are experiencing a first outbreak of Zika virus since 2015, with no previous evidence of circulation, and with ongoing transmission by mosquitos.

  • 17 countries have reported evidence of Zika virus transmission prior to 2015, with or without ongoing transmission or have reported an outbreak since 2015 that is now over.

SUMMARY

  • The second meeting of the Emergency Committee was convened by the Director-General under the International Health Regulations (2005) on 8 March 2016. The Committee advised that the clusters of microcephaly cases and other neurological disorders in some areas affected by Zika virus continue to constitute a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, and that there is increasing evidence that there is a causal relationship with Zika virus.

SUMMARY

  • Between 1 January 2007 and 25 February 2016, a total of 52 countries and territories have reported autochthonous (local) transmission of Zika virus, including those where the outbreak is now over and countries and territories that provided indirect evidence of local transmission. Among the 52 countries and territories, Marshall Islands, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago are the latest to report autochthonous transmission of Zika virus.

During Epidemiological Week 6 of 2016, two new additional countries/territories have reported laboratory-confirmed autochthonous (local) transmission of Zika virus: Aruba and Bonaire, bringing the Regional total to 28 countries and territories reporting local transmission of Zika virus.
