  • Initial reports from the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) indicate that 15 people are confirmed to have died in Dominica during Hurricane Maria, and at least 16 people are missing.
    This figure may rise as contact is made with cut-off communities.
    There is no electricity, very limited communications and a widespread shortage of food and water. An estimated 98 per cent of roofs were partially or totally destroyed, and 50 per cent of housing frames damaged.

BRIDGETOWN, BARBADOS — Hurricane Maria has intensified into an extremely dangerous Category 4 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson wind scale and is expected to strengthen further, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Monday.

Hurricane Maria was about 35 miles (55 km) northeast of Martinique, with maximum sustained winds of 130 miles per hour (215 km per hour), the Miami-based weather forecaster said.

San Jose - IOM, the UN Migration Agency, has deployed a surge team of six experts in shelter and camp management, displacement tracking, and gender-based violence risk reduction to support humanitarian efforts in the Caribbean islands most affected by Hurricanes Irma and Jose. IOM has released around a quarter of a million US dollars from emergency funds for relief in the region.

The United Arab Emirates, UAE, has provided an emergency assistance worth AED36.7 million (US$10 million) to aid those affected by Hurricane Irma in the Caribbean states.

Ordered by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the humanitarian gesture aims to assist and enable international relief efforts to mitigate the suffering of the people on the Caribbean islands. The hurricane wreaked havoc on vital infrastructure and caused human loss.
