2016 was a challenging year for human rights and democracy, with a shrinking space for civil society and complex humanitarian and political crises emerging. In this context, the European Union showed leadership and remained strongly committed to promote and protect human rights and democracy across the world.

Drought. Disease. Earthquakes. Hurricanes. More than 10.6 million people across Latin America and the Caribbean were affected by these disasters in 2016.

Each emergency presented its own set of challenges, whether it was addressing affected livelihoods, the safety of families forced to flee from violence, the growing risk of vector-borne diseases or the sheer scale of major disasters such as the earthquake in Ecuador (April 2016) and Hurricane Matthew in the Caribbean (October 2016).

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) on Friday, 26 of August, began delivering vital aid to thousands of residents in Belize including acutely vulnerable asylum-seekers struggling to recover from the devastating effects of Hurricane Earl earlier this month.

“We are working with our UN sister agencies, our national partner Help for Progress and others in support of the admirable efforts by the Government of Belize to ensure effective help reaches those who need it most,” said Soufiane Adjali, the UNHCR representative in Belize.

  • UNICEF delivers 430 family hygiene kits and $35,000USD to the Government of Belize for humanitarian assistance.

  • All shelters were closed on Friday, 12 August 2016 so there are no remaining people in shelters but many families are placed in temporary homes, rent free, for 2-3 months.

  • UNICEF Belize along with PAHO/WHO continues to strengthen the WASH coordination mechanisms and is in close communication with the government and other partners to identify potential areas of support.
