Drought continues in Southern Africa, while Tropical Cyclone Ava may bring heavy rainfall to Madagascar

  1. An early end to seasonal rainfall has caused a drought in eastern Kenya and southern Somalia. Seasonal moisture deficits have strengthened across several bimodal areas of Tanzania during December.

  2. While east-central South Africa has benefited aboveaverage rain since late November, northern and westcentral areas of the country report moderate to large moisture deficits over the past 30 days.

  2. Below-average rainfall since mid-October have resulted in considerable moisture deficits across parts of the Free State, Gauteng, and Mpumalanga regions of South Africa and in Lesotho and Swaziland.

  2. Heavy rainfall continues to sustain the risk for flooding in southeastern Kenya and northeastern Tanzania.

The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) in collaboration with the National Meteorological Service hereby informs the general public that the strong Tropical Wave in the west-central Caribbean Sea has an 80% chance of becoming a Tropical Depression or a Tropical Storm over night. The system with maximum sustained winds near 35mph is moving to the West-North-West at 12mph. The current position is near 15.6 North Latitude and 82.0 West Longitude or some 90 miles East-North-East of Cabo Gracias a Dios, off the Nicaraguan/Honduras border.

  1. Below-average rainfall since mid-May has led to abnormal dryness across eastern Uganda and southwestern Kenya. Moisture deficits are likely to negatively impact cropping and Pastoral activities.

  2. Repeated weeks of very heavy, above-normal rains have oversaturated the ground in parts of Ethiopia, Sudan, and South Sudan. More heavy rain during the next week is likely to cause further flooding.
