Tropical Storm Chantal - still poorly organized - neared hurricane strength early Monday (Aug. 20) as it churned toward Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and Belize. A hurricane watch was issued for the Yucatan's Caribbean coast from Belize City to the Mexican resort center of Cancun as Chantal's maximum sustained winds remained at 65 mph.

It's been nearly a week since Hurricane Keith hovered for three days over Belize, but thousands living in villages scattered throughout the northeast portion of the country continue to feel the storm's effects. Hurricane Keith weakened on Monday but continued to wreak havoc in Belize, where fierce winds toppled homes and ripped the roofs off hotels. As the storm swirled off the country's Caribbean coast with 75-mph winds, torrential rains caused streets to fill with up to 11 inches of water, and officials warned coastal residents to move inland.
