In spite of more than a decade of modest economic growth, crime and victimization rates are rising, not dropping. Nevertheless, recent information of 2017 show some signs of improvement. Criminal violence is routinely singled out as one of the top concerns of citizens from across Mexico, Central America and South America. And there are warning signs that the region ́s high rates of criminal violence and victimization will continue rising if nothing is done.

Entre 2004 y 2014, la mayoría de los países experimentaron tasas de crecimiento anual cercanas al 4%, los índices de pobreza disminuyeron y los ciudadanos de ALC se volvieron más saludables y alcanzaron un mayor nivel de estudios. De hecho, el objetivo de desarrollo del milenio de reducir a la mitad, entre 1990 y 2015, la proporción de personas que viven con menos de US$1,25 por día se alcanzó en 2008, siete años antes.
