In December 2000 Professor William M Gray et al, forecasted that the 2001 hurricane season would be a below average hurricane season. However, at the beginning of the 2001 hurricane season, this team updated their forecast on June 07, 2001 to indicate that the season would be above average consisting of 12 named storms, 7 hurricanes and 3 intense hurricanes. The long-term averages are: Tropical Storms-10, Hurricanes-6 and Major Hurricanes-2. (NOAA, 2001).

Hurricane 'Iris' hit the southern part of the country in early October, with sustained winds of up to 145mph that destroyed agricultural crops, fishing equipment and tourism and housing infrastructure. Up to 90 percent of the banana crop of southern Belize was flattened by the category 4 hurricane winds, which also destroyed maize, paddy, citrus and cacao crops. The Government has appealed for international assistance, and the international community is providing emergency relief to the affected population.

All 800 families (4,800 people) covered in the Federation appeal to assist victims of Hurricane Iris on Belize, have received blankets, tarpaulins, water buckets as well as hygiene articles. The distributions were carried out by volunteers and staff of the Belize Red Cross Society (BRCS) in 14 villages of the Toledo district, the worst-affected by the hurricane. Food distributions for these families - funded by the Federation appeal, are expected to begin this week. "We will distribute 50 kilos of food every two weeks to each family during three months.
